Getting the right diagnosis

Hello

My daughter is suffering with mental health issues at the moment and has been referred to a clinical psychologist through a very supportive GP. I believe she may potentially fit the criteria for Borderline Personailty however I'm worried she will not be assessed fully for an accurate diagnosis and just get treated for general anxiety and depression.

Does anyone have recommendations on how to go about ensuring she is assessed thoroughly for a diagnosis? Should we be seeking a psychiatrist referral?

Thank you!

@Kristina,

Welcome to the Sane forum.  There are a lot of people on here who have been diagnosed with BPD, and others who have been in your position, as a parent of a person with that diagnosis.

You might find it helpful to peruse this thread in regards to your specific question:

Thank you for the tag @JoseJones

Hi @Kristina

A warm welcome to Sane. My daughter has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and bi-polar and yes to be assessed adequately for a proper diagnosis employing the services of a experienced psychiatrist would be needed. This is who diagnosed my daughter when she was scheduled.

With borderline personality disorder the only real effective treatment is a special form of therapy (sorry, the name of this therapy evades me presently, I think it was called DBT therapy in my state of NSW,  but your psychiatrist would properly inform you about this). It is run only at certain centres/hospitals and you would need to be in a private fund to undertake it. Hope this has been of some help. Wishing you and your daughter the very best 😊

Re: Getting the right diagnosis

Hi @Kristina
My husband took many years to be diagnosed with Bipolar ii but along the way he was given a personality disorder diagnosis "with anxious and borderline features". This was changed to a personality disorder NOS after he did some psychological testing.
There is a lot of cross over with diagnoses and getting it right so appropriate treatment can be given is necessary.
